SCHOOLGIRL ORIENTEER WINS TRIAL Last year's New Zealand women's representative, Dianne Smith (South Auckland) a 17-year-old Waiuku College schoolgirl, won the first junior women's under 19 trial for the Rothmans junior international orienteering team yesterday morning. Second to Miss Smith on the testing Woodhill State forest course was Miss. R. Burwell (Pinelands). The consistent performers in the previous four senior women's trials, Paula Doherty (South Auckland), and Jane Wood (Bay of Plenty) sustained their fine form to finish third and fourth respectively. Clean Sweep Pinelands and Bay of Plenty made a clean sweep of the boys' trial. Auckland juniors placed only three in the first 10 finishers. N. Scoft (Pinelands) orienteered brilliantly to win the trial in 1h 7m from K. Walker (Bay of Plenty), B. Burwell and K. Litten (Pinelands). The New Zealand representative elite, senior women's and veterans' teams held training races to prepare themselves for the Australasian championships to be held on December 1. Elite The elite captain, C. W. Battley, won the elite training race in 2h 19m and the women's captain, Mrs Robyn Davies (Pinelands) won the women's event from Mrs Unni Lewis (South Auckland). A. Nicholls (Bay of Plenty) took the veterans' event.
